Identifying features
Check out some identifying features of the Bird's Nest Fern!

The Bird's Nest Fern features large, undivided, light-green fronds that form a massive, tightly packed rosette or "nest" shape that traps leaf litter. Each leaf has a dark brown or black midrib running down its center. On the underside of mature leaves, it possesses sori, which are brown, fuzzy-looking parallel lines where the fern produces its spores.
Habitat and ecology
This plant is an "epiphyte," meaning it grows on other plants for physical support without taking nutrients from them. The bowl-shaped nest is perfectly designed to catch falling rain and dead leaves. As this debris breaks down in the center of the fern, it creates a rich compost that the plant uses for nutrients.
Did you know?
The "nest" of this fern creates its own suspended micro-habitat! Because it maintains moisture, it provides a safe, moist home high in the canopy for ants, termites, frogs, and even other smaller ferns and orchids.
