What are flowering plants?

Flowering plants, scientifically known as angiosperms, are plants that bear flowers and fruits. They are the most diverse group of land plants, with around 300,000 species! While the vast majority of flowering plants are photosynthetic (making their own food from sunlight), a small remainder are parasitic, obtaining part or all of their food from other plants or fungi. Unlike non-flowering plants like ferns, many flowering plants rely on animals like insects and birds for pollination and reproduction. Flowering plants dominate almost every land habitat on Earth, and can be found in freshwater and marine environments as well.
