What are freshwater fish and invertebrates?
Freshwater fish are fish species that live primarily in freshwater habitats. In Singapore, these include ponds, canals, reservoirs and forest streams, amongst others. Despite freshwater bodies only being around 1% of the Earth's surface, freshwater fish have an incredible global diversity, making up around half of all known fish species.
Freshwater invertebrates are invertebrate species that spend part or all of their life cycle in freshwater habitats. These species include molluscs, crustaceans like crabs and prawns, aquatic insects like water bugs, amongst others. Freshwater invertebrates can even refer to insects like flies and dragonflies, which spend their larval stages in freshwater.
