What are reptiles?

Reptiles typically refer to lizards and snakes (Squamata), turtles (Testudines), and crocodilians (Crocodilia). Birds can also be included under the definition of reptiles as they share a common ancestor with crocodilians, but are traditionally excluded. Reptiles are cold-blooded, meaning that they rely on their external environment to regulate their internal temperature. They also have epidermal scales made of keratin. Most reptiles are oviparous, laying shelled eggs externally, but some species are viviparous, giving birth to live young. Reptiles have evolved to occupy many types of habitats, from the forest canopy to the vast ocean. While the majority of Singapore’s reptilian diversity is found in our forests, we can encounter them in our urban areas and even our shores!
