What are birds?

Birds are warm-blooded, feathered vertebrates that constitute the class Aves. They are the only living descendants of dinosaurs! Birds are characterised by feathers, toothless beaks, and modified forelimbs known as wings. While most birds use their wings for flight, some species have evolved to be flightless, instead using their wings for swimming (penguins) or relying on strong legs instead (ratites).

In Singapore, over 400 bird species have been recorded, an astonishing number for our small island state. Because Singapore lies at the intersection of the Central Asian Flyway and the East-Asian Australasian Flyway, we are a unique biodiversity hotspot for birds! Many of these are migratory species that journey from as far as Siberia to escape the harsh winters in the Northern Hemisphere.
