About the Noble Volute in Singapore

The Noble Volute (Cymbiola nobilis) is a large snail with a striking appearance. It is often buried in the day and comes out at night.
A patient predator, the Noble Volute hunts for buried snails and clams, enclosing any prey that it finds with its large foot, and reaching in to feed when the shelled animal opens up to breathe.
Identifying features

The thick conical shell of the Noble Volute is typically a vibrant orange, yellow or beige, with red or brown zig-zag patterns. The fleshy body of the snail is black with bright orange or yellow spots.
Habitat and ecology
The Noble Volute is found on sandy shores near coral rubble or seagrasses in the intertidal zone. Previously abundant, habitat degradation and overcollection have depleted its populations.
