Nationwide BioBlitz

Become a citizen scientist by joining BioBlitz! You can contribute to ongoing biodiversity research in our parks islandwide by recording animal sightings, or helping with habitat enhancement.

About BioBlitz

BioBlitz is organised under NParks' Community in Nature initiative.

In addition to the biodiversity survey, you can also join a habitat enhancement event to help plant trees and improve an area in a park to support wildlife.

The 2024 edition ran from 20 April to 12 May 2024, between 7am and 12pm in various parks and nature reserves across Singapore. In 2024, BioBlitz focused on four types of wildlife: birds, butterflies, bees and dragonflies.

Why this matters

The data you collect during BioBlitz helps us understand what animals are in which green spaces, how many there are, and whether there are changes year to year. This information will be used in ongoing research on Singapore's biodiversity, which in turn informs how we carry out conservation and habitat enhancement works.

You will be working alongside volunteer scientists, and we hope that you get to learn more about the biodiversity around you!

Who can participate

BioBlitz is open to everyone, regardless of experience. If you are new to wildlife spotting, we will provide online training to help you get started.

If you are confident in your ability to identify species, training is optional.

What you need

No special equipment is required to take part. All you need is either:

  • A datasheet and pen, or

  • A smartphone with access to our online form.

Although not required, a camera or binoculars can help you better observe and record the species.

What to expect

This is the typical process of taking part in BioBlitz:

  1. Register and choose your park and animal group: After registering, select a park from a provided list to conduct your survey, and select the group of animals you want to focus on.

  2. Go for online training: You will receive online training recordings to guide you on how to identify animals.

  3. Conduct the survey: Visit your chosen park on any day within the survey period to observe and record as many animals as you can.

  4. Submit your data: Record your observations using a datasheet and pen, or use our online form. You can send us photos of animals you cannot identify for identification help.

Participants are advised to take necessary precautions and conduct the surveys in small groups.
