The Cryptic Painted Frog is easily recognised by its distinct reddish-brown to bright orange "cinnamon" coloration that covers its entire body. Scattered across its back and legs are tiny, stark-white spots that stand out against its vibrant hues. Another notable feature of this frog are its very large, prominent eyes with vertical pupils, which are specially adapted to help it see while hunting at night.
Instead of a typical loud croak, the male Cryptic Painted Frog has a very unique, quiet call that sounds like a soft, musical chuckle echoing from the tree hollows.
The Cryptic Painted Frog can also be identified through its call. Hear its call here!
Habitat and ecology
They are perfectly adapted for climbing, using their expanded toe pads to cling to leaves and branches.
While they naturally breed in "phytotelmata" (small, water-filled cavities in trees or logs) they have also adapted to human environments. They have been observed breeding in artificial water bodies like old oil drums, tires, and abandoned flower pots where their tadpoles can develop safely away from fish.
