The Spotted Wood Owl features a smooth, rounded head that completely lacks the "ear tufts" seen on the Buffy Fish Owl. It possesses a plain, rich-orange facial disc framing its dark, completely black eyes. Additionally, its chest and belly are covered in beautiful, heavy barring and distinct white spots.

Habitat and ecology
They are strictly nocturnal hunters of the forest canopy and understory, heavily preying on urban rodents like rats and mice, making them fantastic natural pest controllers for the city.
