The Banded Woodpecker (Chrysophlegma miniaceum) is a beautiful, medium-sized resident woodpecker found in Singapore's mature forests, nature reserves, and older parks.

The Banded Woodpecker features reddish-brown to maroon coloration on its wings and back, and a shaggy, yellowish-orange crest on the back of its head. Its belly and lower chest are covered in heavy, distinct black-and-white horizontal stripes, from which it gets its "banded" name.

Habitat and ecology
Unlike the Common Flamebacks that frequently hammer loudly on hard wood, the Banded Woodpecker is generally quieter. They prefer to forage in the middle canopy, heavily targeting the nests of tree-dwelling ants and termites hidden in dead branches and epiphyte roots.
