The Lesser Mousedeer (Tragulus kanchil) is the smallest known hoofed mammal in the world. In Singapore, these elusive residents are largely restricted to the mature, dense forests of the Central Catchment Nature Reserve and Bukit Timah Nature Reserve.

You can recognize the Lesser Mousedeer by its small size. They are roughly the same size as a small domestic cat. If you spot one, look closely at its slender, pencil-thin legs and naturally arched back, and be sure to note the distinct white stripes running right down its throat and neck.
Habitat and ecology
They are highly secretive, terrestrial herbivores that cautiously pick their way through the leaf litter in search of fallen fruits, fungi, and young leaves. They lack antlers entirely; instead, the males have elongated upper canine teeth that protrude like tiny tusks, which they use when competing for mates.
