Females and non-breeding males are generally a dull brownish-yellow colour, and grow up to 37cm from snout to tail. Both sexes also have a crest running down the majority of the length of their body.
During the breeding season, males become a bright orange to red in colour from their heads to shoulders with a black throat.
Habitat and ecology
Thriving in urban parks and gardens and feeding on insects, the Changeable Lizard can commonly be seen running across pathways or basking in patches of sunlight. When they feel threatened they will often dart up tree trunks and attempt to remain on the opposite side of the trunk from the perceived threat.
During the breeding season males will often perform “pushups”, to display dominance, defend their territories or attract a mate.
