While not as common as other lizard species, the Green-crested Lizard (Bronchocela cristatella) is a brightly coloured lizard which can still be found in many habitats.
They are known for their quick movements and the beautiful crest running along their neck and back, which gives them their name.

Green-crested Lizards can be recognised by their slender bodies and long tails.
This lizard grows to about 55cm from snout to tail. It usually has small spines running down the back of its head. While their skin is usually a vibrant green, it can turn brown if the lizard feels stressed or threatened.
Habitat and ecology
The Green-crested Lizard can typically be found in forested areas, especially along forest edges. They were likely to be more abundant and widespread in the past, but it is believed that the Changeable Lizard has outcompeted them in many of their past habitats.
