Habitat and ecology
They share similar dietary habits to other parakeets, feeding on fruits and seeds. They nest high up in the pre-existing hollows of tall, old trees, often competing with native birds like woodpeckers and hornbills for these valuable nesting spots.
Did you know?
They are highly social roosting birds! As the sun sets, up to hundreds of Red-breasted Parakeets will gather to sleep in a single, massive "communal roost" in a few specific urban trees, creating an incredibly noisy spectacle.
Frequently asked questions
Q: How do I tell the difference between the Red-breasted Parakeet and the Long-tailed Parakeet?
To distinguish between the two species, focus primarily on their chest and head coloration. The Red-breasted Parakeet features a prominent pinkish-red chest and a pale grey head marked with a stark black "moustache" stripe. In contrast, the Long-tailed Parakeet has a completely green chest and body. Instead of a red breast, it sports a green head with striking reddish-pink cheeks and, as its name suggests, possesses a noticeably longer, often blue-tinged tail.
