Coral reefs in Singapore
Discover our vibrant underwater reefs, learn where these unique ecosystems can be found, and explore the fascinating marine species that thrive among Singapore’s waters!
Hard corals comprise of tiny colonial animals known as coral polyps that build calcium carbonate skeletons. As these colonies grow, they form coral reefs, creating vibrant underwater ecosystems that support an array of marine life. Coral reef habitats require specific conditions to survive. They thrive in temperatures between 23°C and 29°C, with high salt levels and bright light.
About a quarter of marine species depend directly or indirectly on coral reefs for breeding grounds, shelter and sustenance. Coral reefs also defend coastlines against the effects of waves, storms and floods.
Singapore's coral reefs support a rich diversity of marine life. These reefs are home to over 250 species of hard corals, more than 200 species of sponges, 120 species of reef fish and various other marine organisms.
Each reef is divided into zones – the reef flat, reef crest, and reef slope – each supporting different marine communities based on depth and light availability.

The reef flat, closest to the shore, is exposed during low tides and may vary in width and depth. The corals in this zone need to able to survive the heat of the sun and periods of time out of the water.
The reef crest, which remains submerged, has the highest density of marine life. It is the zone of greatest coral growth. As this zone usually faces strong currents, corals found here are well-adapted to withstand and diffuse strong currents.

As one descends the reef slope, the density of organisms decreases, and the community changes to those that are adapted to low-light conditions.
The sea floor is usually silty or sandy, but where rocky surfaces appear, are usually festooned with sea whips and sea fans and colourful cave corals.
These reefs are unique to Singapore and are an important part of the nation's natural heritage.
