The intertidal zone, located between the highest and lowest tidemarks, is rich in marine life. However, it is also one of the most stressful environments for marine creatures to live in as the habitat can be exposed to the air up to twice in a day. This includes sandy beaches.
Sandy beaches are coastal habitats characterised by stretches of sand formed by the accumulation of tiny rocks, shells, and other sediments. These environments are shaped by the movement of waves, providing dynamic and unique habitats for a variety of marine life such as molluscs and tubeworms.
Sandy beaches are important for recreation as well, offering popular spots for people to relax and enjoy water activities.
Where can we find sandy beaches?
In Singapore, intertidal zones can be found along several coastal areas where the land meets the sea. Most of the intertidal zone is typically only exposed at low tide.
Sandy beaches can be found in several locations. Some of the most well-known include those at East Coast Park and Changi Beach Park. Smaller stretches can also be found at Pasir Ris Park and Labrador Nature Reserve.
Intertidal Etiquette
As the intertidal area is fragile, visitors should avoid touching, trampling and collecting wildlife. Covered shoes should also be worn for protection. Find out more about intertidal dos and don'ts.
