Seagrass meadows in Singapore
Singapore is home to precious intertidal zones. Discover our seagrass meadows, explore where these unique ecosystems can be found, and learn about the fascinating marine species that thrive within Singapore’s rich seagrass meadows!
The intertidal zone, located between the highest and lowest tidemarks, is rich in marine life. However, it is also one of the most stressful environments for marine creatures to live in as the habitat can be exposed to the air up to twice in a day. This includes seagrass meadows.
Seagrass meadows are key to a flourishing intertidal ecosystem. They provide food and nursery grounds for young animals such as crabs, shrimps and fishes.
Twelve species of seagrasses can be found across Singapore's Northern and Southern shores. Animals that can be found in seagrass meadows include sea stars, seahorses, crabs, sea urchins, sea cucumbers and marine snails.
TeamSeagrass, a group of volunteers, conducts regular seagrass monitoring surveys. Find out more about TeamSeagrass' work!

Where can we find seagrass meadows?
In Singapore, intertidal zones can be found along several coastal areas where the land meets the sea. Most of the intertidal zone is typically only exposed at low tide.
Seagrass meadows can be found at Chek Jawa, Pulau Semakau, Cyrene Reef, Sentosa, Labrador Beach, and along sections of East Coast Park and Changi Beach Park.
Intertidal Etiquette
As the intertidal area is fragile, visitors should avoid touching, trampling and collecting wildlife. Covered shoes should also be worn for protection. Find out more about intertidal dos and don'ts.
