The Purple Heron (Ardea purpurea) is one of the most common large herons in Singapore. Here, there are both resident and migratory populations. Similar to the Grey Heron, they nest in Singapore year-round, and can often be found in mixed roosts with Grey Herons!

Generally unmistakable due to its large size and purple plumage. The Purple Heron can usually be identified by the bold dark line running down its rufous-chestnut neck.
Juveniles are a dull orange-brown and may not appear purple at all! They also lack the bold line present on the neck of adults.

Habitat and ecology
Purple Herons have feet with long toes, which spread out their weight when walking across floating vegetation. This allows them to be effective hunters, eating everything from fish, insects and even small mammals!

Often mistaken with the former, the Purple Heron is of similar size and shape to the Grey Heron. However, the Grey Heron lacks the distinctive stripe that runs down the neck of the Purple Heron.
