The Bougainvillea cultivars feature massive clusters of brilliantly colored, papery petal-like bracts that bloom in vibrant shades of pink, magenta, red, orange, or white. To spot the actual true flowers, look closer to find three tiny, tubular, white, trumpet-shaped structures hiding right in the center of these colored bracts. Be careful when handling the plant, as it also possesses sharp, woody thorns hidden directly under each leaf along its twisting stems.
Habitat and ecology
They are perfectly adapted to hot, dry conditions. In fact, too much water encourages the growth of lots of green leaves but reduces blooming! Despite being kept as hedges, they are actually climbers and use their tough thorns to scramble up and over other trees or fences to reach maximum sunlight.
Frequently asked questions
Q: Are those bright pink parts the flowers?
No, they are actually modified leaves called "bracts"! Because the plant's true white flowers are so tiny and inconspicuous, the Bougainvillea evolved these conspicuous, brightly colored, paper-like leaves to surround the flower and attract pollinators from far away.
