Habitat and ecology
Like many wild gingers, they thrive in the heavy shade and rich, moist leaf litter of the forest floor. They grow from creeping underground rhizomes (stems), occasionally sending up new leafy shoots, which are actually a series of tightly overlapping leaf sheaths.
