The Ixora cultivars feature dense, rounded clusters of tiny flowers that bloom in vibrant shades of bright red, pink, yellow, or orange. If you look closely at these clusters, you will notice that each individual flower consists of exactly four petals arranged in a distinct cross shape, all attached to a long, thin tube. These colorful floral displays are beautifully framed by stiff, glossy, dark green leaves that grow in opposite pairs along the stem.
Habitat and ecology
Because their nectar is hidden deep at the bottom of those long, thin floral tubes, they specifically attract pollinators equipped with long mouthparts, such as butterflies and the long-beaked sunbirds.
Did you know?
Many Singaporeans have fond childhood memories of interacting with this plant! It is a local tradition to carefully pluck a single tubular flower from the cluster and suck the tiny, sweet drop of nectar hidden at the base of the stem.
