The Pianggu features distinctively drooping branches that give the entire tree a graceful, weeping silhouette. When observing the foliage up close, point out the alternating, leathery leaves that grow completely flat along a single plane in a precise, distichous arrangement. As the tree bears fruit, look out for its clusters of small, round, yellow-orange fruits, which eventually split open to reveal a striking, bright reddish-pink aril covering the seed inside.
Habitat and ecology
Because they can tolerate waterlogged soils, mature Pianggu trees can develop a fluted base.
