The Seashore Ardisia features a distinct reddish tint on its new, young leaves and stems, adding a subtle splash of color to the plant's fresh growth. When it is in bloom, look out for its umbrella-like clusters of delicate, star-shaped flowers that open in shades of pale pink or light purple. As the seasons progress, you can point out its round, berry-like fruits, which put on a colorful transition as they mature, turning from green to bright red, and finally to a deep, dark purplish-black when fully ripe.
Habitat and ecology
This plant can tolerate salt spray where many other plants would quickly dry out. Its dark, juicy fruits are an incredibly important food source for birds.
Did you know?
This native shrub is a victim of its own success! Because it is so tough, fast-growing, and its seeds are easily spread by birds, the Seashore Ardisia is actually considered a highly invasive and destructive weed in tropical places outside of its native range, such as Hawaii and Florida.
