The Common Flangetail (Ictinogomphus decoratus) is a magnificent, very large species of "clubtail" dragonfly. Fairly widespread in Singapore, these impressive residents prefer large expanses of open water like reservoirs and large park ponds.

The Common Flangetail is characterized by its huge size, growing up to 12 centimeters long, and its striking black body heavily banded with greenish-yellow spots. It features a wide physical gap separating its two blue-green eyes, a classic characteristic of the clubtail family. Near the clubbed end of its abdomen, it also possesses prominent flanges, which are distinct leaf-like protrusions. These unique flanges are visibly smaller on the females.

Habitat and ecology
They have a very powerful flight but are highly habitual. They will often return to perch on the exact same prominent twig or stick near the water's edge over and over again, making them easier to photograph if you are patient!
