The Spine-tufted Skimmer (Orthetrum chrysis) is a medium-sized, resident dragonfly in Singapore. They are a relatively widespread and common sight around freshwater pools, ponds, and forest streams.

The male Spine Tufted Skimmer features a brilliant, blood-red abdomen that sharply contrasts with his dark brown thorax and red face. He also possesses a distinct, curled tuft of bristles or "spines" on his second abdominal segment near the thorax, which gives the species its name. Females are much less colorful, sporting a plainer ochreous or reddish-brown body with hazy patterns.

Habitat and ecology
They breed in pools and shallow marshes. Males are highly territorial over their breeding grounds. After mating, the male will fiercely guard the female, hovering directly over her like a hawk to chase away rival males while she dips her abdomen into the water to lay her eggs.
